About Me

Hi, I’m Jasper. Welcome!

When I was 16, one of my parents took a job in Boston, and soon after I headed to boarding school in Bethel, Maine. Moving to New England felt a lot like the John Denver line from “Rocky Mountain High”: “He was born in the summer of his 27th year,
Coming home to a place he'd never been before”.

Maine gave me a love of the outdoors and sports, and Boston showed me how great a walkable city can be. It also turned me into a history buff. Trains were my first passion, but history was a close second. I’m drawn to history broadly, not only the Revolutionary War era Boston is famous for.

More generally, I love understanding complex systems: how their rules work, and how they respond to new situations or changes to those rules. That curiosity runs through my favorite subjects: history, politics, computers (especially IT and AI), mathematics, and science. Lately I’ve been getting into economics and finance too.

Outside of learning, I like to stay active, explore new places, and spend time with friends and family. For years I’ve done alpine and cross-country skiing, plus road and mountain biking. I’ve also rowed crew and gone mountaineering (that’s where the photo on this page comes from). More recently, I’ve picked up snowboarding and rock climbing. I’ve been to more than 20 countries, though I’ve honestly lost exact count.

Thanks for reading!
Jasper
